Bioproducts from Renewables - Biosourced Building Block Chemicals

Project Descriptions:

Characterization and use of residual lignocellulosic biomass for the production of higher value products. This innovative research, initiated in September 2008 in collaboration with Dr. Michael Cunningham (ORC in Green Chemistry and Engineering) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University explores the feasibility of using residual biomass and energy crops as feedstocks for the production of monomers for conversion to higher value chemicals. This project explores the use of ionic liquids as “green” solvents for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass and the use of dissolved biopolymers (lignin and cellulose) to generate hybrid copolymers from renewables, as well as methodologies for rapid in-situ biomass characterization. The possibility of producing bioethylene from renewables is also being investigated in collaboration with Dr. Warren Mabee  (Director of Queen’s Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy) in the Departments of Geography and Policy Studies at Queen’s University and Dupont of Canada.
