Thesis: Graft co-polymerization of cellulose

Abstract (short synopsis): The graft co-polymerization of cellulose in homogeneous medium was explored.¬† Microcrystalline cellulose was dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and functionalized with bromoester groups to create an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) type macroinitiator capable of dissolving in organic solvents.¬† A single electron transfer (SET) polymerization method was then used to grown poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(methyl acrylate) chains from the cellulose to create a comb copolymer.
